There are ways to do that, but in order for that to work at all you
need to have BIOS support.  Some of the ATA ``RAID'' products work
like that: they have BIOS support for mirroring/failover, but the
operating system has to do all the work once it's booted.  FreeBSD
supports these controllers reasonably well, and they are quite
economical.
