What types of failures have you seen, and what types of modems
have you tried?

I've used a Zoom V.90 (Model 2975L) and it works, but generates 
LOTS and LOTS of "interrupt-level buffer overflow" messages, even
when running at "low" speeds, and does experience data loss 
("ls -lR /" is a good test).
