Actually such an effort won't have to be sudden at all.

5.0 isn't going to be released next week and people running -CURRENT can
just install perl from the ports by hand.  Recording build dependencies on
perl can be done at a slower pace and really only has to be done by the
time -CURRENT is released.

Right?
