There was a "lockup fix" for SMP amd64 systems just before 5.4 was released. Also, what ethernet driver are you using? I had major problems with bge network cards (on the mobo) under heavy disk + network load. Many lockups and reboots. I ended up putting in intel NICs and the problem went away.
