Changing the syntax of /etc/fstab is a very delicate issue. Of course, it would be possible to change the syntax in a backwards-compatible way. I always format my camera's memory card under FreeBSD after I have downloaded all images from it (which requires connecting to the FreeBSD machine anyway).
