   Tried this twice, no joy.  I am rebuilding world now to make sure I
   didn't screw something up there.

   By fresh ports tree do you mean - delete a refetch, or to 'cvsup' it
   up to date?

      Try to pkg_delete the port and install it again from source with a fresh
      ports tree. I had simular problem yesterday before recompiling
      python2.0.
