Paul, can you please join the ports list? There have been some bug
reports concerning Apache, and you have your feet deep into the
"ports" pond I think you should be on the list.... :)

Also, the files installed as
/usr/local/www/server/conf/access.conf{,-dist} are not updated to the
chosen installation directories, e.g. they contain references to:
/usr/local/etc/httpd/htdocs/
and not to what DocumentRoot is set to (as suggested by the comments), e.g.:
/usr/local/www/data
