Basically, that would mean that the Win98 virtual system would have a different network interface than the FreeBSD box it is running on. Why don't you try getting an old 486, installing FreeBSD on it and setting it up as an internet gateway to use instead the Win98 box? I understand you're leaving the place soon, but if it works I see no reason why your roommates should oppose it... and it certainly does rock on FreeBSD.
