Hi Lisa, The supfile just upgrades the sources. You actually have to build and install it for it to make any changes. Using the standard supfile, you can just do portupgrade -arR and it will only upgrade your ports, it won't touch the base system at all. Then when you want to upgrade the base system, you have the sources available and can do that. But don't worry, there's nothing wrong with having the most up to date base source, even if you haven't upgraded in a couple months. I use portsnap for updating my ports tree. I wish I could tell you the advantages, but I've been using it for over a year now and don't really remember to be perfectly honest :) Anyway, I run portsnap nightly, and then do a weekly update of my base system source using cvsup.
