This stuff began as just a bunch of things to do daily.  It was split 
up into the various /etc/periodic scripts and directories some time 
ago so that it could be managed more easily.

Cron runs /usr/sbin/periodic.

I have no intentions to change the way /usr/sbin/periodic is invoked.
