I do have the midi and seq devices in my kernel config. The good news is, it works. I have sound, xmmix can adjust volume, xmcd can play CDs, and mplayer can play DVDs (and I've even got sound coming out of all 4 speakers, so surround is working out of the box). Life is good. I guess I'll migrate the laptop from RELENG_5_2 to HEAD as well, although for it I'll need the libmap.conf, as it's got an Nvidia graphics board in it. I'll paste my config file and pciconf just in case: 10:53pm yakko /home/jamie %cat /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/yakko machine i386 cpu I686_CPU #aka Pentium Pro(tm) ident yakko options INCLUDE_CONFIG_FILE #Include this file in kernel options SCHED_4BSD options ADAPTIVE_MUTEXES options INET #InterNETworking options INET6 #IPv6 communications protocols options IPSEC #IP security options IPSEC_ESP #IP security (crypto; define w/ IPSEC) options FFS #Berkeley Fast Filesystem options SOFTUPDATES #Enable FFS soft updates support options PROCFS #Process filesystem (requires PSEUDOFS) options PSEUDOFS #Pseudo-filesystem framework options COMPAT_43 #Compatible with BSD 4.3 [KEEP THIS!] options COMPAT_FREEBSD4 #Compatible with FreeBSD4 options SCSI_DELAY=15000 #Delay (in ms) before probing SCSI options SYSVSHM #SYSV-style shared memory options SYSVMSG #SYSV-style message queues options SYSVSEM #SYSV-style semaphores options _KPOSIX_PRIORITY_SCHEDULING #Posix P1003_1B real-time extensions options KBD_INSTALL_CDEV #install a CDEV entry in /dev options SMP #Symmetric MultiProcessor Kernel device apic # I/O APIC device isa device pci device ata device atadisk #ATA disk drives device atapicd #ATAPI CDROM drives device atapifd #ATAPI floppy drives device atapist #ATAPI tape drives device atapicam #emulate ATAPI devices as SCSI ditto via CAM options ATA_STATIC_ID #Static device numbering device ahc #AHA2940 and onboard AIC7xxx devices options AHC_ALLOW_MEMIO device scbus #SCSI bus (required) device ch #SCSI media changers device da #Direct Access (disks) device sa #Sequential Access (tape etc) device cd #CD device pass #Passthrough device (direct SCSI access) device ses #SCSI Environmental Services (and SAF-TE) device atkbdc #AT keyboard controller device atkbd #AT keyboard device psm #PS/2 mouse device vga #VGA video card driver device splash #Splash screen and screen saver support device sc device agp #support several AGP chipsets device npx device acpi device apm device sio #8250, 16[45]50 based serial ports device ppc device ppbus #Parallel port bus (required) device lpt #Printer device plip #TCP/IP over parallel device ppi #Parallel port interface device device vpo #Requires scbus and da device miibus #MII bus support device fxp #Intel EtherExpress PRO/100B (82557, 82558) device xl #3Com 3c90x (``Boomerang'', ``Cyclone'') device bge #Broadcom BCM570xx Gigabit Ethernet device pcm device midi device seq device joy device bktr options OVERRIDE_TUNER=1 options BROOKTREE_SYSTEM_DEFAULT=BROOKTREE_NTSC device smbus #Bus support, required for smb below. device ichsmb device iicbus device iicbb device iicsmb device random #Entropy device device loop #Network loopback device ether #Ethernet support device ppp #Kernel PPP options PPP_BSDCOMP #PPP BSD-compress support options PPP_DEFLATE #PPP zlib/deflate/gzip support device tun #Packet tunnel. device pty #Pseudo-ttys (telnet etc) device gif #IPv6 and IPv4 tunneling device faith #IPv6-to-IPv4 relaying (translation) device stf #6to4 IPv6 over IPv4 encapsulation device bpf #Berkeley packet filter device cbb #Cardbus (yenta) bridge device pccard #PC Card (16-bit) bus device cardbus #CardBus (32-bit) bus #device pcic #ISA attachment currently busted device uhci #UHCI PCI->USB interface device ohci #OHCI PCI->USB interface device ehci device usb #USB Bus (required) device ugen #Generic device uhid #"Human Interface Devices" device ukbd #Keyboard device ulpt #Printer device umass #Disks/Mass storage - Requires scbus and da device ums #Mouse device urio #Diamond Rio 500 MP3 player device uscanner #Scanners device firewire #FireWire bus code device sbp #SCSI over FireWire (Requires scbus and da) device fwe #Ethernet over FireWire (non-standard!)
