I got a new IBM ThinkPad 560 today, and I'm trying to get FreeBSD installed using the network card. I'm completely ignorant about this stuff, as will soon become apparant. The network card is a LinkSys PCMIA combo card (NE2000 compatible). I got it instead of the 3c589 because (a) Mike Smith raves about the NE2000 compatibles for laptops, (b) I couldn't find the Accton card that he recommends all the time, (c) it's listed as a supported card under PAO, and (d) I figured my first choice would be the wrong one, so I decided to start with the cheap card instead of the expensive one. :-) I first tried the install floppy from the most recent snapshot on current.freebsd.org. It didn't recognize the card, which was no big surprise. Next I tried the latest PAO boot floppy. It did recognize the card and set it up with the ed0 driver, as expected. I started the emergency holographic shell and was able to ifconfig the card and so forth. So far so good. Then I tried pinging the laptop from another machine. No response. My hypothesis at this point is that the wrong media is selected for the card. My network is 10base2, and I'm afraid maybe the card is being configured for 10baseT. This guess is based on the fact that commands like ifconfig seem to work fine, but the card isn't responding. (The receive light doesn't blink when I ping it, either.) So ... is there a way to select the media for this card? I tried "link2" on the ifconfig line, and it didn't make any difference. For fun, I tried various combinations of "link1" and "link0" also.
