Here's a discussion on the performance problem: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-performance/2008-January/003096.html I remember, but can't find the reference now, that the problem became visible because PHP introduced realpath() checking for include files in a minor release (like 5.1.6 or something like that) to work around a security problem. This is when users saw noticeable drops in performance (and I don't think it solved their security problem :) ).
