For the present, having BOTH ports is the correct way to go.
devel/gettext-old, 0.10.35, provides a libintl.so.1 which works
with all the gettext consumers in the Ports collection.
devel/gettext, 0.10.40, provides only binaries (unless you define
WANT_FULL_GETTEXT, which is something that people should NOT generally
do, unless they are testing a full upgrade to 0.10.40).. only binaries
needed by the new GNOME and similar ports. devel/gettext, 0.10.40,
does NOT provide libintl.so.1, so all applications that actually use
the gettext internationalization need devel/gettext-old, 0.10.35, installed.

At least, this is the situation for the present; I do not know exactly
how portmgr and/or Ade Lovett intend to proceed.

G'luck,
Peter
