In #bsd-dk (www.bsd-dk.dk) we recently discussed this matter. Many 
people concurred that IBM laptops were great with Freebsd, because they 
use the kind of hw that freebsd often support (or is it the other way 
around?:)

Just a little "chip-in" to your search.

You sound like beeing quite sure on your laptop things, but anyway you 
might take a look at this page (or others in the same situation), for a 
pointer in the crasy hunt for a laptop (it helped med alot)
