That allows gdm to work fine for me.  ( i have the same problem).

I put the gdm line in rc.local to start at the start, after a while (with
rc1) it stopped working, so i hashed it out (didn't bother testing it with
2.0 release).

Well, it looks like the shell script may be the way to go.  One other
thing you can try is to start gdm out of ttys without any arguments. 
That is, just run gdm by itself.
