GDM automatic login (per https://help.gnome.org/system-admin-guide/login-automatic.html) works. However, lockup occurs at lock screen, so this isn't a very useful workaround. I installed lightdm and, with seatd installed and configured via seatd_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf, I can log in.
