Hm.. that doesn't seem to help. I just confirmed this CD is AMD64 and 
"file kernel" doesn't say AMD64 anyhere..

kernel: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (FreeBSD), 
dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped

So far /cdrom/RELNOTES.TXT seems the better method.
