Yes support for the VIA VT82C686A was just added into the pcm driver in 4.2RC1, so I thnk everything is just not quite working yet. I have that chip on my mobo too, and did the same thing and after MAKEDEV /dev/snd0 I ran XMMS. It played out only white noise. So maybe just wait a bit for the improvement.
