GNOME requires a GNOME compliant window manager. These include, among others, enlightenment, sawmill/sawfish, and windowmaker. Of the three, I think that sawmill/sawfish works the best with GNOME in terms of aesthetics, etc. As for the name, it used to be called sawmill, but they had to change the name to sawfish.
