I had a problem with SMP + xdm some time ago.  I don't remember the
details.

The resolution was to start xdm "the correct way", in
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/xdm.sh, with one ttyvx "off", as I stated.

Have you tried creating /usr/local/etc/rc.d/xdm.sh and turning off one
ttyv(x)?
