Tcpdump or some other packet sniffer would allow you to track the
traffic to and from the machine.  BIND also has an option to track what
queries are being generated and from whence they came (don't recall how
to enable it from memory).

Sorry, don't think I can help you there.  What startup scripts are you
using?
