It's been around since 2.1.0 at least.  That's when I first got bitten
by it (on my first install of FreeBSD, IIRC.).

I've just seen more and more users getting bitten by it, so it's
annoying me more and more.  It tends to result in catastrophic
failure, sometimes even on running systems (when people just want to
add a partition).

I've CC:'ed him, since he doesn't read hackers.

If there isn't any good way, I can do the changes necessary to create
one (if one of you two are willing to review them for me).
