I'd recommend you add /usr/X11R6/bin to your path variable (either .cshrc or .profile depending on the shell you are using). I assume you are doing it from the root account and you have correctly excluded . (dot - current dir) from your path. Try ./xdm. Alos check for the presence of X and the corresponding link to the appropriate server.
