Ok, I think I've narrowed down what was going on. Thanks to several people
that showed me the Scroll-Lock + PgUp/PgDn trick, I was able to see the rest
of the boot messages.
The last boot message related to my first CD-ROM was:
cd0: Attempt to query device size failed: NOT READY,
(there was nothing after the comma)
Scratching my head, I rebooted again but this time as soon as it started to
boot I inserted the Disk #1 from my FreeBSD 3.1 CD-ROM pack ... it got down
to the scsi probe, and viola:
cd0: cd present [322265 x 2048 byte records]
I then went back into sysinstall, got to the "media" screen, hit CD-ROM and
<drum roll please> BOOM! Worked!
So, now the question exists: "When did this behavior during boot change, is
this a bug or feature?"
I've installed FreeBSD 2.x.x on my machine from since the days of 2.0.5. I
don't remember ever having seen this problem. Granted it was on another
machine, but still. Other philosophical things:
o If this is a bug, where does it lie? sysinstall? The boot code?
o I can accept the fact that one must have a disc in the drive to get things
to work (hey, I've done wierder things to install NT!!!--including a Mexican
hat dance around the computer.... :) ... if this is "required" then shouldn't
the next logical thing be to put this in the error message of sysinstall?
i.e. if it doesn't detect a CD-ROM it might suggest that you:
a) examine your termination
b) use Scroll-Lock + PgUp/PgDn to few the scsi probe messages
c) put the disc #1 into the drive during boot
Thanks for all that responded. Looks like the Scroll-Lock thing was all I
needed to figure out the "duh" problem going on here. The bottom line is if
3.1 sysinstall doesn't find your CD-ROM, try putting a disc in it before the
end of the boot sequence.
I still wonder whether this is a bug or feature? :-)
