Thomas Dickey has suggested in [1] to use the following termcap snippet: rxvt|rxvt terminal emulator (X Window System):\ :pa#64:Co#8:AF=\E[3%dm:AB=\E[4%dm:op=\E[39;49m:tc=rxvt-mono: which adds colours to the defaults provided by the rxvt-mono entry.
