 Workaround:
 
 Enter the virtual BIOS (DEL during boot)
 Advanced / IDE Configuration / Primary IDE Channel
   Block (Multi-Sector Transfer) [Disabled]
   32Bit Data Transfer           [Disabled]
 
 After disabling these two settings, FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE boots.
