I use snapshots. I keep a clean state snapshot and just revert to it every time
I close the machine. When I install updates or do some configuration I want to
keep I remove the snapshot, shutdown cleanly and create a new clean state.

BTW with one exception (guess which!) OSes nowadays are fast at shutting down
most of the time.
