You shouldn't plan to do an FTP install over a modem, if it's even
supported, it's a scary thought. You can download all the files you need,
and put them on the DOS partition in the c:\freebsd\ directory (in the
same structure they were in on the server), but keep in mind that unless
you have have a really really nice modem, this is basically going to be an
indefinate project. I downloaded the binary (text only, no docs, etc...)
FreeBSD and installed from dos partition, it took about six hours to down
load the files I needed just for that (albeit I have a slow modem)... :(.
I suggest either ordering the CD-ROM and saving a lot of headaches (and
phone time) or going to your local university or library with some
portable mass storage like a tape or zip disk if you are going to download
FreeBSD + xfree86.
