As has been pointed out, it's not always obvious. I just use this in my
.procmailrc:

# KEEP AN 8K CACHE OF MESSAGE IDS AND FILTER DUPLICATES
#######################################################

:0 Wh: msgid.lock
| formail -D 8192 msgid.cache
