Bingo! I built a kernel from -current after copying the /sys tree to a local disk on the axp33. That kernel booted just fine. Strangely enough I have in the meantime built multiple kernels via NFS that also worked fine. So, it looks like that 'sometimes' the use of NFS results in a non booting kernel. Nasty... FWIW I'm using a FreeBSD226-release server, running a Kingston 10/100 PCI adapter: de0 <Digital 21140A Fast Ethernet> rev 34 int a irq 14 on pci0:9:0 de0: 21140A [10-100Mb/s] pass 2.2 de0: address 00:c0:f0:30:41:fb The axp33 has a DE500 Digital ethernet card. Both are connected using a Linksys 10/100Mbit hub.
