I do not mind at all, go ahead. You can 'commandeer' the differential in
phabricator to upload your newer revisions.

Basically, it would be nice to clean it up in such a way that it isn't a
ladder of if statements, but I am not sure if there is a better way.

I think xmj was imagining this. I had a start on one a CentOS 7 port @
BSDCam last year, but it wasn't in a working state.
