Yeah, check out /usr/ports/misc/buffer (buffer)...
I do something like this regularly:-
dump -0uaf - /usr |ssh -c blowfish -l backup remote.host.com buffer -o
/dev/nrsa0
Works like a charm, and speeds things up a litte...
