Well, it is supposed to be doing the same thing that
"src/lib/csu/i386-elf/crt1.c" already did before the change.  It just
does it a little bit sooner.

I have to put this aside until later (hopefully tonight).  Meanwhile,
another interesting test would be this:

    set_program_var("__progname", NULL);
    set_program_var("environ", NULL);
