It's supported, and this is the way it's > been for years. If the 40upgrade.tgz package was actually on the ftp site, this would be much less of an issue. Since it's not, you have to either start hacking around or update the base system. ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-4-stable/Latest/40upgrade.tgz (It's clearly referenced from http://www.freebsd.org/ports, but hasn't been present for months, if it ever was.)
