I get the same error message (FreeBSD 4.4), a techie told me the problem is the ATA66 and ATA100 specs say you can only have 1 device per channel. I'm not seeing any problems with usage tho. my configuration is 40gb ATA66 capable drive on ata0/master and a cdrw on ata0/slave. I have no problem burning CD-Rs with burncd, (a program for burning CDs on ATAPI devices). I learned that mkisofs needs -R to enable rockridge extensions (long filenames).
