How about you start by reading the sio(4) manpage?

     sio%d: tty-level buffer overflow.  Problem in the application.  Input has
     arrived faster than the given module could process it and some has been
     lost.

Are you using user-mode ppp?  If so, it sounds like the machine is
heavily loaded and the ppp process is being starved of CPU for extended 
periods of time.
