I finally had some time to spend on this, and Steve's sample code 
doesn't work on my system:

	[root@localhost: ~] ./a.out
	Write init1: Input/output error

This is a box with a SiS chipset (see below) and this week's -current. I 
think Torfinn had problems with those as well. Is their USB chip quirky? 
That'd be very unfortunate.
