I haven't had problems with my serial visor cradle.  I just set the port
device (which it sounds like you have done) and set it to type 'device'
in the vmware device configuration.

Windoze saw it and just worked from there (well... that is until my
vmware decided to start rebooting my machine... see email from yesterday).
