The disadvantage, of course, is the hassle of maintenance.

I should finally have time to actually contribute documentation and code
to the project again soon.  If I'm the guy who ends up doing this, I'll
almost certainly do it exactly as Brooks Davis suggested, as it'll ease
maintenance without degrading the usefulness of the documentation, your
comments notwithstanding.

I've promised to do some work for Kris Kennaway first, so someone else
may beat me to the punch here.  Since all the suggestions put forward
will work to some degree, I think this is one of those things where
Poul-Henning's philosophy of "he who builds it chooses the colour" will
work well.
