Loking at 'top', I notice that XFree 4.2 (or whatever the newest version is)
appears to be using about 68MB of RAM. This is without a window manager,
just the checkerboard background and the X cursor. Is this normal?

My system: AMD based PC, X having been compiled with some optimizations.
Could that be it?
CFLAGS="-s -O2 -march=pentiumpro -malign-functions=4
-fexpensive-optimizations -fschedule-insns2 -mwide-multiply
-fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"
