If you are doing some minor stylistc changes, there's no harm in doing some minor whitespace mending. I do it all the time. And now's a good time to point out that while we have rules about these sorts of things, they are generally guidelines. One should endeavor to follow them, there are times that flexibility is needed and in those cases the rules should be looked at in their whole rather in the minutia.
