I would HIGHLY recommend trying the alpha PCCard drivers. We installed them on a similarly equipped machine (with similiar PCMCIA cards) and it is working great. Should be on ftp.freebsd.org. Complete instructions included. APM doesn't work well with an OS like FreeBSD, anyway. UNIXs like to use the disk a lot.
