IMO
I would change that to
# make aout-to-elf
shouldn't be a problem
# cd /sys/boot
# make depend && make all && make install
Should't be a problem
# cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf
Compare your config file with the changes to GENERIC and/or LINT
# KERNFORMAT=elf;export KERNFORMAT
# config -r YourKernel
# cd ../../compile/YourKernel
# make depend && make && make install
Now I would reboot with a big smile and update all my rc's and /etc en
general.
