  OK, here is the followup report to my initial posting.. :)

 The recommendation that -O2 was breaking things was correct on the 
Alpha, and I have actually done a complete re-install and make world
just using -O and all seems happy now.

 I know the FBSD project doesn't condone the use of -O2, but from all
my experiences with the Intel port this works just fine.  Needless to 
say this is *not* the case with the Alpha port, and I will be sure not
to try that again.. :)

 Anyway many thanks to all that responded trying to help, and hopefully
I can now setup a usable Alpha box..
