I presume your XP partition is NTFS 5.1, right? As such it isn't a DOS partition and AFAIK there's currently no support for NTFS 5.1, and there has never been support for installing from any type of NTFS partition. Regarding the machine hanging, have you tried waiting a few minutes to see if the install will eventually continue.
