If this happens for example during boot-time, it won't finish booting FreeBSD because it will never get any further than reading the CD label. I started having this error with the first 7.0 releases, if I remember correctly. The drive works fine with other OSes, so I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue. It also doesn't matter, whether the CDs are copy-protected or not. The CDs have no scratches whatsoever. This is what dmesg spits out when it happens: acd0: TIMEOUT - READ_CD retrying (1 retry left) acd0: TIMEOUT - READ_CD retrying (0 retries left) acd0: FAILURE - READ_CD timed out acd0: TIMEOUT - READ_CD retrying (1 retry left) acd0: TIMEOUT - READ_CD retrying (0 retries left) acd0: FAILURE - READ_CD timed out acd0: TIMEOUT - READ_CD retrying (1 retry left) acd0: TIMEOUT - READ_CD retrying (0 retries left) acd0: FAILURE - READ_CD timed out acd0: TIMEOUT - READ_CD retrying (1 retry left) acd0: TIMEOUT - READ_CD retrying (0 retries left) acd0: FAILURE - READ_CD timed out acd0: TIMEOUT - READ_CD retrying (1 retry left) Complete dmesg: Copyright (c) 1992-2009 The FreeBSD Project.
