I would always recommend creating a custom kernel which is based on an include of GENERIC, then add / remove devices to your choices. This way your more likely to avoid issues and its very clear what you've changed from the default. In addition this way makes it easier to upgrade your custom kernel through OS versions as you'll always pickup the new "defaults" from GENERIC. Hope this helps.
