In my original post I failed to include this part of the error message, which comes at the end: XIO: fatal IO error 54 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. As I said earlier, when I unload the new kernel and boot the old one I have no problem bringing up X. Rem
