It is possible that some patch on your disk is bad and reading/writing
it makes the command time out. Upgrading might have changed which bit
of the disk is in use provoking the problem.

If you want to have a look at the recent changes in the ata code then
start at:

The main change in the last month seems to be 48 bit addressing.
